Fabio Gea Onde Gravitazionali Rosso 2020
Fabio GeaGrape: Nebbiolo, Barbera
Vintage: 2020
Type: Red
This experimental red blend from the 2020 growing season is described by avant-garde winemaker Fabio Gea as a surfer wine. Operating a tiny plot near Bricco di Neive, Gea follows his gut instincts to ride the wave of the specific vintage. The fruit is destemmed and macerated for two weeks before undergoing a spontaneous wild yeast fermentation. It is raised entirely in custom stoneware and porcelain vessels, bypassing oak barrels to ensure an unfiltered, low-sulfur profile.
It displays a translucent ruby hue, opening with expressive aromatics of tart red cherries, pomegranate, and dried roses. On the palate, a medium-bodied frame pairs a fleshy core of fruit with an underlying stony mineral line. A lively wave of natural acidity cuts through the center, providing excellent structural tension. Fine-grained tannins provide a smooth structural grip across the mid-palate. It finishes completely bone-dry, leaving a lingering trail of damp forest clay.
Fabio Gea:
Fabio is a young winemaker making delicious, distinctive wines from tiny parcels around the Bricco in Barbaresco. He makes 18 different wines with a total production of around 5,000 bottles.
He has a few rows of vines from his grandfather’s property and rents a few more. Within the family’s property, there is Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Grignolino, which amount to less than one hectare.
A geologist turned winemaker, the handmade labels, bottles, and aging are uniquely Fabio Gea. We find these wines fascinating, one of our great joys is having such distinctive wines. Organic (not certified)
