This red wine comes from the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, a unique landscape sitting just below the Washington border in the Walla Walla Valley. Winemaker Graham Markel sources the syrah and roussanne from vineyards rooted in deep beds of large cobbles and river rocks. The winemaking utilizes spontaneous native fermentation and low-extraction protocols to let this specific terroir voice itself clearly. It matures in neutral French oak barriques to build structure without imparting dominant wood flavors.

It displays a bright purple-ruby color, releasing intense aromas of black olives, fresh violets, and cracked black pepper. A medium-bodied, athletic frame pairs dark berry fruit with a distinct, wet-stone mineral baseline. The fine-grained, chalky tannins provide a smooth texture that frames mid-palate cleanly without feeling heavy or jammy. A clean thread of natural acidity runs through the center, keeping the fluid mouthfeel refreshed. It finishes dry, leaving a long trail of tapenade.

Graham Markel graduated from Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and got a job at Antica Terra Winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. For seven years, he worked under Antica Terra’s Maggie Harrison and Hiyu Wine Farm’s Master Sommelier, Nate Ready. He learned many things from those two, but the number one thing I learned was to think deeply about winemaking and how to add beauty to every step of the process. No matter how arduous or tiring, every action must be taken to make the best wine possible. Living at Hiyu Wine Farm in Hood River opened my eyes to the many winemaking possibilities that were on offer in the Columbia Gorge.
