Podere Le Boncie Le Trame Toscana 2023
Podere Le BoncieGrape: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Mammolo
Vintage: 2023
Type: Red
Grown in Giovanna Morganti’s biodynamically farmed, high-density vineyard in Castelnuovo Berardenga, this cuvée represents the historic heart of the estate's stony limestone and clay soils. The hand-harvested fruit ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in open-top wooden vats, undergoing a traditional maceration with minimal intervention before aging in neutral oak casks. The traditional co-ferment of traditional Tuscan varieties emphasizes elegance, depth, and structural complexity over high extraction. This is a soulful, deeply expressive Chianti Classico-area red that defines authentic Tuscan winemaking.
It opens with a radiant ruby hue and complex aromas of dried cherry, red currant, leather, and wild Mediterranean herbs. The palate reveals layers of tart red plum, orange peel, sweet earth, and tea leaf, supported by fine-grained, persistent tannins and a bright mineral drive. A supple, medium-bodied texture carries through the mid-palate with remarkable poise and energy. It concludes on a long, dry finish defined by lingering notes of crushed stone, iron, and dried roses.
Winery
Podere Le Boncie is a biodynamic micro-estate spanning roughly four hectares in San Felice, just north of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southern tier of Chianti Classico. Established by Giovanna Morganti—who received the land from her father, legendary Tuscan oenologist Enzo Morganti, and was mentored by sangiovese master Giulio Gambelli—the winery stands as a touchstone for traditionalist Tuscan winemaking. Morganti planted her main vineyard to a high-density alberello (bush vine) system, cultivating sangiovese alongside historically co-planted native varieties like ciliegiolo, colorino, mammolo, foglia tonda, and canaiolo. In 2011, she famously opted out of the Chianti Classico DOCG consortium, choosing to release all bottlings under the IGT Toscana designation rather than adjust her traditional methods to meet standardized regional regulations.
In the cellar, Morganti follows an unhurried, low-intervention approach that emphasizes transparency and structural grace over dense extraction. Grapes undergo spontaneous, native-yeast fermentations in open-topped wooden vats with extended macerations and gentle manual punch-downs. The wines mature in neutral mid-sized Slavonian and Austrian oak casks before being bottled without fining, filtration, or heavy sulfur adjustments. Her small portfolio—led by the structured, age-worthy flagship Le Trame, the fresher, multi-variety blend Cinque, and the stony, single-parcel bottling Chiesamonti—delivers a translucent, high-acidity expression of Tuscan terroir defined by wild herbs, tart cherry, savory earth, and fine mineral length.
