Dominio do Acor Reserva Tinto 2021
Dominio do AcorGrape: Jaen
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red
This single-vineyard red wine comes from the Vinha Celta parcel in the granitic slopes of Portugal's Dão region. Dominio do Açor sources the fruit from thirty-four-year-old jaen vines, a variety identical to the Spanish mencía cultivated under sustainable viticulture. The hand-picked grapes undergo a spontaneous native fermentation driven by wild vineyard yeasts inside neutral open vats. It ages in seasoned French oak barrels to integrate its structural elements while completely avoiding heavy wood flavor dominance or filtration.
It pours a deep ruby-purple color, opening with expressive aromatics of blue fruit, fresh spice, and crushed granite. A medium-bodied frame balances power with ethereal freshness, delivering a silky, succulent mouthfeel. Savory notes of forest floor and wild thyme add a deep complexity without feeling heavy or extracted. An electric wave of natural acidity cuts right through the center, keeping the wine lively. It finishes dry and persistent, leaving a clean mineral trail.
Winery
Domínio do Açor is based near Oliveira do Conde, in the Terras de Senhorim area of Portugal’s Dão. Granite is the defining geological thread, with old field blends and separately planted parcels preserving a wide range of local grapes. Encruzado, Cerceal and Bical are important to the whites, while varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro shape the reds. Winemaker Luís Lopes, viticulturist João Costa and terroir consultant Pedro Parra bring complementary experience to a project centered on the differences between its vineyards.
Farming is moving toward organic cultivation, with biodynamic practices introduced in selected parcels. In the cellar, indigenous yeasts, stainless steel, carefully chosen barrels and traditional granite lagares are used according to the wine. Aging on fine lees and measured handling aim to develop texture while keeping the fruit and the character of the site clear. The Vila Romana wines provide a broader view of the property, while bottlings such as Vinha Ruína and Vinha Celta focus more closely on individual grapes and parcels within the estate.
