Cameron Winery Pinot Noir 2024
Cameron WineryGrape: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2024
Type: Red
Sourced from dry-farmed, organically managed vineyards in the Dundee Hills and broader Willamette Valley, this entry-level cuvée reflects John Paul's non-interventionist, classic Burgundian approach. The hand-picked fruit ferments naturally with indigenous yeasts in small open-top fermenters, utilizing a combination of whole-cluster and destemmed grapes. The wine ages in neutral French oak barrels to allow the raw fruit and basalt soil character to express themselves without wood masking. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a traditional, cool-climate Oregon pinot noir focused on savory complexity, high natural acidity, and unpretentious balance.
A pale, translucent ruby hue gives way to lift-driven aromatics of wild strawberry, sour cherry, forest floor, and crushed rose petals. The palate is light and nimble, delivering vibrant flavors of cranberry, red plum, dried tea leaf, and subtle spice. Fine-grained, persistent tannins and a bright beam of acidity give the mid-palate structural tension while keeping the liquid weight fresh and energetic. It finishes dry, clean, and savory, concluding with lingering notes of citrus peel, damp earth, and crushed stone.
Winery
Cameron Winery was founded in 1984 by winemaker John Paul in the Dundee Hills of Oregon's Willamette Valley. A former marine biologist, Paul built the estate around traditional Burgundian principles and dry-farming practices, later co-founding the Deep Roots Coalition to advocate against artificial vineyard irrigation. The winery relies primarily on two landmark sites: the estate Clos Electrique vineyard in the Dundee Hills, featuring volcanic Jory soils planted to high-density massal selections, and the higher-elevation Abbey Ridge vineyard. Both plots are farmed organically and biodynamically, growing pinot noir and chardonnay alongside small experimental parcels of nebbiolo and Italian white varieties.
In the cellar, winemaking centers on low intervention, spontaneous native yeast fermentations, and patient barrel maturation. Red grapes undergo partial or full whole-cluster fermentations in open-top vats before aging in mostly neutral French oak, preserving savory earthiness, bright natural acidity, and age-worthy tannic structure. His whites—especially the chardonnays—undergo full malolactic conversion and extended lees contact, creating a flinty, textural style reminiscent of traditional Burgundy. Bottled without fining or filtration, Cameron's single-vineyard Clos Electrique and Abbey Ridge bottlings, along with unique cuvées like the skin-contact blend "Giuliano," deliver a distinct, site-focused alternative to high-extraction Oregon wines.
