Grape: Roussanne, Marsanne, Muscat Blanc, Colombard
Vintage: 2023
Type: Orange

Martha Stoumen’s 2023 Post Filtration Orange brings together skin-contact Roussanne, Marsanne, Muscat Blanc, and Colombard sourced from organic vineyards across Northern California. The white grapes undergo extended skin maceration in neutral tanks, allowing native yeasts to drive fermentation while extracting soft tannins and deep amber pigments. Aged on fine lees without fining or filtration, the wine bypasses heavy additives to keep its natural energy and raw texture intact. It stands as a vivid, low-intervention snapshot of California skin-contact winemaking.

Pouring an amber-apricot shade, it opens with high-toned aromas of candied orange peel, dried jasmine, and fresh ginger root. On the palate, a juicy core of bruised peach and dried mango balances a snappy, citrus-led acidity. The skin maceration imparts a gentle, tea-like tannin that wraps cleanly around the medium-bodied mouthfeel. A subtle salinity and crushed-stone undertone keep the finish brisk, dry, and thoroughly appetizing.

Winery

Martha Stoumen is a first-generation California vigneronne based in Sonoma County who has become a leading voice for low-intervention winemaking in the state. After earning a master’s degree from UC Davis and spending years apprenticing around the globe—most pivotally alongside Giusto Occhipinti at Azienda Agricola COS in Sicily and Didier Barral in the Languedoc—Stoumen launched her eponymous project in 2014. She self-farms and collaborates directly with historic, multi-generational growers across Northern California, sourcing from dry-farmed, organically managed old-vine sites in Mendocino County, Contra Costa, and Suisun Valley. Her viticultural focus highlights Mediterranean and heritage varieties naturally suited to California's climate, including nero d'avola, carignan, colombard, negroamaro, and zinfandel.

In the cellar, Stoumen applies an intuitive philosophy centered on freshness, lower alcohol levels, and natural acidity rather than heavy extraction or oak manipulation. Fermentations occur spontaneously via native yeasts in neutral oak barrels and stainless steel tanks without cellar additives, fining, or filtration, using only minute sulfur adjustments prior to bottling. Her portfolio ranges from energetic skin-contact whites and playful, light-bodied red blends like "Post-Flirtation" to age-worthy, single-vineyard expressions such as her old-vine carignan from the Venturi Vineyard. Together, her wines offer a vibrant, site-expressive reimagining of California terroir.
