Haus Gupi El Fayoum Gutedel 2021

Price:$40.00

Grape: Gutedel
Vintage: 2021
Type: White

This white wine comes from the Baden region of Germany, produced under a collaborative natural wine project by Claus Schneider. The one-hundred percent gutedel grapes are hand-harvested from rows rooted in complex clay and limestone soils that naturally restrict yields. The winemaking utilizes low-intervention protocols, featuring a cool fermentation driven entirely by native wild yeasts in neutral stainless steel vats. It ages on its fine lees for several months to encourage textural balance without wood manipulation.

It pours a pale straw-yellow color, releasing clear aromatics of fresh green apple, lime zest, and white orchard flowers. A sleek, light-bodied frame balances crisp fruit flavors with an underlying stony mineral core. A lively wave of natural acidity cuts right through the center of the wine, providing excellent structural tension. Subtle notes of fresh pear and a distinct salinity add depth across the clean mouthfeel. It finishes completely dry, leaving a refreshing trail.

Winery

The Schneider family’s Weingut am Schlipf is based in Weil am Rhein, at the southern end of Baden where Germany meets France and Switzerland. Claus Schneider and his wife Susanne developed the estate’s reputation before sons Johannes and Christoph took on the vineyard, cellar and commercial work. The family’s sites include Schlipf, Stiege, Sonnhohle and Sonnenbrunnen, with clay and limestone contributing different expressions. Gutedel and the Pinot varieties are central to the estate’s identity.

Haus Gupi is the family’s more experimental range, its name joining Gutedel and PInot. Certified organic farming, biodynamic practices, hand harvesting and careful yields provide the foundation. Johannes’s experience in Burgundy, Alsace and southern France adds another perspective to the regional traditions. The Haus Gupi wines are intended to remain fresh, aromatic and easy to drink, with a lighter, less manipulated approach to the fruit. Bottlings such as El Fayoum and La Bohème give Gutedel a distinctive role within the estate’s broader work with the vineyards of southern Baden.
