Grape: Gamay, Aligoté
Vintage: 2023
Type: Red

This low-intervention red wine is a field blend of gamay and aligoté crafted by Californian winemaker Jonathan Purcell in Burgundy. Sourced from organic plots, the fruit is vinified in an ancient one-hundred-year-old cuverie in Auxey-Duresses using zero sulfur additions. The grapes undergo a long, hands-off skin maceration with whole clusters, relying on native wild vineyard yeasts for fermentation. Purcell transfers the wine using natural gravity flow instead of mechanical pumps to safeguard structural freshness.

It displays a bright ruby hue with slight haze, releasing intense aromas of cherry, raspberry, and wild berries. On the palate, the light-bodied frame is juicy and refreshing, focusing on a vibrant, low-extraction red fruit presentation. Savory underscores of forest floor, wild mushroom, and woodsmoke add a detailed complexity across the fluid core without feeling heavy. A clean current of alpine acidity runs through the center, maintaining great freshness. It concludes bone-dry with a clean finish.

Vin Noé is Jonathan Purcell’s small Burgundy project, established after he moved from San Diego to study wine in Beaune in 2012. Experience with David Croix and Philippe Pacalet, followed by vineyard work at Domaine de Montille and Domaine Matrot, helped shape his approach. An early collaboration with Chris Santini led to the first Vin Noé bottlings in 2017. Jonathan later took on vineyards around Saint-Aubin and Puligny-Montrachet from Jean-Jacques Morel and moved into Morel’s former cellar in the hamlet of Gamay in 2021.

The project combines those carefully farmed parcels with purchased fruit, allowing a range that extends from more approachable cuvées to specific Burgundian sites. Since the initial vintage, Jonathan has made the wines without added sulfites, putting close attention to grapes, fermentation and handling at the center of the work. Pattaya, Amour Vache and Rêve Américain show different sides of that range. Together, they offer a personal view of Burgundy from a grower whose path began abroad but whose day-to-day work is now rooted in the region’s vineyards.
