Pedro ParraGrape: Cinsault
Vintage: 2018
Type: Red
This low-intervention red wine is a pure varietal expression of Cinsault sourced from ancient, dry-farmed vineyards in Chile's Itata Valley. Renowned terroir expert Pedro Parra selects fruit from old vines rooted in complex granite soils rich with quartz inclusions. The hand-picked grapes undergo a spontaneous native fermentation using one-hundred percent whole clusters inside neutral concrete vats, avoiding forced extraction. It matures for several months in seasoned wooden foudres to permit the structural components to settle.
It pour a translucent ruby color, opening with high-toned aromatics of wild raspberry, tart cherry, and fresh violet petals. On the palate, the light-to-medium-bodied frame is fluid and balancing crunchy red fruits with a chiseled mineral baseline. Soft, fine-grained tannins provide a gentle grip across mid-palate volume without introducing heavy or extracted components. A clean wave of mountain acidity cuts through the texture, maintaining great freshness. It concludes bone-dry, leaving a light trail of graphite.
Pedro Parra is a Chilean geologist and terroir consultant whose own wines in Itata have become a vivid expression of granite, old vines and southern Chile's dry-farmed heritage. After years advising major estates around the world, Parra returned to focus on Cinsault, Pais and other old-vine material planted around Guarilihue and nearby villages. His approach begins with the ground: decomposed granite, quartz, slope and root depth. The wines are fermented with restraint, often with whole clusters and older vessels, aiming for energy rather than weight. They are fragrant, stony and direct, showing Chile beyond Cabernet and beyond industrial scale.
