Paolo Bea San Valentino Umbria Rosso 2019
Paolo BeaGrape: Sagrantino
Vintage: 2019
Type: Red
This low-intervention red wine comes from the San Valentino vineyard, an estate plot characterized by rich clay-heavy soils in Umbria. Winemaker Giampiero Bea follows a strict hands-off philosophy, allowing a spontaneous fermentation driven by native wild yeasts in neutral tanks. The fruit undergoes an extended skin maceration without modern temperature styling, commercial enzymes, or synthetic additives. It matures for several months inside stainless steel vats to preserve an and regional profile before bottling unfiltered.
It pour a ruby color with garnet reflections, opening with fragrant aromatics of wild cherry, plum, and dried roses. On the palate, the light-to-medium body is fluid and balancing crunchy red fruits with a chiseled mineral baseline. Soft, fine-grained tannins provide a gentle grip that structures the fluid mouthfeel nicely without aggressive extraction. A clean wave of mountain acidity runs through the center, keeping the profile fresh and lively.
Paolo Bea is one of the great reference points for traditional, natural-minded wine in Umbria. Based in Montefalco, the Bea family farms Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and local white varieties with a deep respect for mixed agriculture and the rhythms of the farm. The wines are fermented spontaneously, often macerated for long periods, bottled without filtration and released only when they feel ready. They can be powerful, tannic and uncompromising, but they also carry warmth, honesty and a profound connection to place. Bea's wines are not designed to flatter quickly; they ask the drinker to meet them on their own terms.
