Grape: Listan Negro
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red

Sourced from a single vineyard plot on the volcanic island of Lanzarote, this red wine focuses on the indigenous Listán Negro grape. Pablo Matallana manages the ancient vines in La Bardona, where the roots struggle through deep layers of black lapilli and ash. The hand-picked clusters are fermented spontaneously with native wild yeasts in open-top vessels, utilizing a gentle manual punch-down regimen. It matures for several months in neutral French oak barrels to allow the components to settle without wood dominance.

It pours a translucent ruby color with violet rims, opening with aromas of wild raspberry, pomegranate, and volcanic smoke. A light-to-medium-bodied frame is exceptionally fluid and balancing crunchy red fruits with a mineral tension. Fine-grained, soft tannins provide a structural grip that coordinates with a racy wave of coastal acidity. Savory underscores of cracked black pepper and ash add depth across mid-palate.

Pablo Matallana is one of the most thoughtful young voices in the Canary Islands. Based on Tenerife and trained through both enology and serious field work, he has become known for recovering old vineyards and working with traditional varieties such as Listan Negro, Listan Blanco and Vijariego. His parcels often sit on volcanic soils in dramatic, wind-shaped landscapes, where farming is laborious and yields are naturally modest. In the cellar he favors native yeasts, gentle extraction and minimal additions. The wines are light on their feet but full of volcanic imprint, combining smoke, herbs, salt and bright Atlantic freshness.
