Weingut Hermann Ludes Kabinett Feinherb Gackes Oben 2022
Weingut Hermann LudesGrape: Riesling
Vintage: 2022
Type: White
This white wine is an off-dry Kabinett Feinherb expression of Riesling sourced from the upper slope of the Gackes vineyard. Winemaker Julian Ludes harvests the old vines from the steep, blue slate terraces of Thörnich to capture crisp natural acidity. Spontaneous fermentation relies entirely on native wild yeasts inside traditional neutral vats, avoiding modern additives or high-temperature technological manipulations. This low-intervention process focuses on maintaining a classic feinherb balance between natural sugars and mountain freshness.
It displays a pale straw hue, releasing complex aromatics of white peach, grapefruit rind, and cold slate minerality. On the palate, a lightweight frame balances a gentle fruit sweetness with a bracing line of Mosel acidity. The subtle residual sugar coordinates beautifully with the racy entry, preventing the texture from feeling overly sharp. A clean vein of flinty salinity runs through the center, adding depth across the clean mouthfeel. It finishes clean, persistent, and off-dry.
Weingut Hermann Ludes is a traditional Mosel estate in Thorneich, focused on old-vine Riesling from steep slate vineyards including the Thorneicher Ritsch. Long known mostly to insiders, the domaine has gained attention for wines that feel intensely classical: light in alcohol, high in acidity, often off-dry, and marked by smoke, herbs, citrus and slate. The estate's style is not glossy or technologically polished. It is transparent, sometimes severe and beautifully detailed, preserving a Mosel idiom that depends on patience, old vines and the tension between ripeness and electric acidity.
