Grape: Riesling
Vintage: 2022
Type: White

This white wine is an off-dry Kabinett Feinherb expression of Riesling sourced from the lower slope section of the Gackes vineyard. Julian Ludes manages the old vines manually on the steep slate terraces of Thörnich, where roots run deep into weathered bedrock. The grapes undergo a completely spontaneous fermentation driven by native wild vineyard yeasts inside neutral stainless steel tanks. The liquid matures on its fine lees without modern adjustments to encourage natural structural harmony.

It pours a clear straw-yellow color, releasing clean aromas of green apple, lime zest, and a distinct smoky reduction. On the palate, the light-bodied frame pairs fresh orchard fruit flavors with an underlying chiseled slate minerality. A lively wave of natural acidity cuts through the mouthfeel, balancing the subtle residual sweetness of the feinherb profile. The texture remains light on its feet, avoiding any heavy or syrupy volume. It concludes with a crisp, dry-tinged finish.

Weingut Hermann Ludes is a traditional Mosel estate in Thorneich, focused on old-vine Riesling from steep slate vineyards including the Thorneicher Ritsch. Long known mostly to insiders, the domaine has gained attention for wines that feel intensely classical: light in alcohol, high in acidity, often off-dry, and marked by smoke, herbs, citrus and slate. The estate's style is not glossy or technologically polished. It is transparent, sometimes severe and beautifully detailed, preserving a Mosel idiom that depends on patience, old vines and the tension between ripeness and electric acidity.
