Antonella Lombardo Greco di Bianco 2023
Antonella LombardoGrape: Greco di Bianco
Vintage: 2023
Type: White
Sourced from organic, sea-facing terraces along Calabria’s Costa dei Gelsomini, this dry expression showcases the rare, ancient Greco di Bianco grape. Grown in white calcareous clay soils that reflect the intense Mediterranean sun, the hand-harvested fruit is picked early to preserve its vibrant acidity. Antonella Lombardo ferments the juice naturally with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, avoiding oak to maintain the variety's raw aromatic intensity. The wine rests on its fine lees for several months to build structural weight before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. This bright, low-intervention coastal white balances sun-drenched fruit with sea-spray salinity.
A pale yellow-gold color in the glass gives way to expressive aromas of white peach, orange blossom, wild marjoram, and crushed marine shell. The palate is dry, crisp, and energetic, offering focused flavors of salt-cured lemon, green apple, raw almond, and a touch of Mediterranean garrigue. A persistent beam of natural acidity drives through the lightly textured mid-palate, keeping the mouthfeel agile and direct. It finishes long, dry, and distinctly saline, leaving lingering notes of citrus zest, bitter herb, and wet stone.
Winery
Antonella Lombardo established her small estate in 2019 in Bianco, on Calabria’s Costa dei Gelsomini. After a career as a lawyer in Milan, she returned to the region to work with its native grapes and distinctive coastal landscape. Clay soils with limestone marl, strong sunshine and winds from the nearby sea provide the setting. Mantonico and Greco di Bianco are particularly important to the white wines, alongside red varieties including Gaglioppo, Calabrese Nero and Nerello Mascalese.
The vineyard work avoids chemical herbicides and synthetic treatments, using natural cover crops and organic amendments to support the soil. Careful selection of the grapes and an emphasis on local varieties carry that work into the cellar. The range includes Autoritratto Mantonico and several interpretations of Greco, giving grapes often overshadowed by better-known Italian varieties a central role. The project’s identity comes from that combination of a personal return home, attentive agriculture and the rediscovery of Calabria’s own wine traditions.
