Tanca Nica Soki Soki 2024
Tanca NicaGrape: Catarratto
Vintage: 2024
Type: Orange
This low-intervention white skin-contact wine is crafted from old catarratto bush vines on the volcanic island of Pantelleria. Winemakers Francesco Ferreri and Nicoletta Pecorelli manual harvest the low-yielding plots from sandy, black volcanic sand. The grapes undergo a spontaneous native fermentation driven by wild yeasts with a short, precise skin maceration inside neutral tanks. The wine matures naturally on its fine lees and is bottled entirely unfiltered, unfined, and with zero added sulfur.
It shows a luminous, slightly hazy golden-straw hue, releasing vibrant marine aromas of salted lemon, wild caper bush, and volcanic ash. On the palate, a medium-bodied, texturally rich frame pairs fresh orchard fruit flavors with an underlying smoky mineral core. A crystalline current of bracing, high-toned acidity slices directly through the center, keeping the mouthfeel thoroughly refreshed. The brief skin contact provides a fine, chalky grip that structures the mid-palate cleanly. It finishes bone-dry and saline.
Tanca Nica is a tiny Pantelleria estate run by Francesco Ferreri and Nicoletta Bocca, working old bush vines on the island's black volcanic soils. Pantelleria is better known for sweet Passito di Pantelleria, but Tanca Nica explores a broader, wilder language for Zibibbo, Catarratto, Pignatello and other local grapes. Farming here is necessarily heroic: low alberello vines crouch against wind, drought and sun, often in small stone-walled parcels. The wines are made with minimal intervention and can be dry, macerated, salty and intensely Mediterranean, carrying caper, citrus peel, herbs, sea air and the isolation of the island.
