Grape: Viognier, Vermentino, Moscato
Vintage: 2023
Type: Orange

This low-intervention orange wine represents a unique blend of viognier, vermentino, and moscato grown on the volcanic shores of Lake Bolsena. Winemaker Joy Kull harvests the fruit from a rescued twenty-year-old plot in Farnese rich in volcanic ash. The winemaking utilizes a zero-zero approach, featuring a partial skin maceration and spontaneous native yeast fermentation inside fiberglass tanks. The wine settles naturally and is bottled entirely unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur.

It shows a deep golden color with amber edges, opening with wild aromatics of apricot, orange blossom, and warm wood. On the palate, a medium-bodied frame balances an oily texture with a sharp beam of electric volcanic acidity. A fine, sandy tannic grip frames the mid-palate cleanly, providing excellent structural tension. Complex notes of dried thyme and citrus peel develop as the liquid breathes. It concludes with an bone-dry finish, leaving a trail of salty brine.

La Villana is the small wine estate of Joy Kull, an American winemaker making natural wine in Lazio, Italy. She is committed to non-interventionist farming, indigenous varieties, indigenous yeast, and no-sulfur winemaking. Joy's wines are simple, enticing and delicious, and meant for early consumption.
