Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2023
Mas de DaumasGrape: Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, syrah, malbec
Vintage: 2023
Type: Red
Grown on cool, north-facing slopes in the Haute Vallée du Gassac, this iconic Mediterranean red is rooted in deep, unglaciated red glacial soils surrounded by wild garrigue. The vineyard's unique microclimate lets Cabernet Sauvignon ripen slowly alongside traditional southern varieties, forming a blend fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. Following a 3-week skin maceration, the wine ages for 12 to 15 months in mostly neutral French oak barrels. This refined, classic Languedoc red marries cool-climate elegance with rich southern character.
A deep ruby color with violet edges leads to aromas of wild blackberry, cassis, dried thyme, and subtle pipe tobacco. On the palate, focused flavors of dark plum, tart black cherry, crushed iron, and cedar are supported by fine, persistent tannins and a bright vein of natural acidity. The mid-palate has an energetic, medium-bodied weight that feels structured yet graceful. It closes on a long, savory finish marked by notes of bitter cocoa, crushed stone, and dried herbs.
Winery
Mas de Daumas Gassac was founded in the early 1970s by Aimé and Véronique Guibert in the Gassac Valley near Aniane, Mas de Daumas Gassac is celebrated as the pioneer that proved the Languedoc could produce world-class, age-worthy wines. Guided by renowned Bordeaux geologist Henri Enjalbert, who identified the valley's deep, un-clogged red glacial soil and cool night microclimate surrounded by wild Mediterranean garrigue, the estate bypassed conventional regional norms. Rejecting industrial yields and strict AOC restrictions, the Guiberts intentionally classified their wines as Vin de Pays de l'Hérault (now IGP Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert) to maintain complete freedom over their varietal choices and traditional viticultural practices. Today, the estate is run by the Guibert brothers, who continue to preserve its rich biodiversity and organic farming ethos.
