Lalù Langhe Nebbiolo 2024

Azienda Agricola Lalu
Price:$48.00

Grape: Nebbiolo
Vintage: 2024
Type: Red

This red wine is nebbiolo from vines that are entitled to be Barolo but are declassified to Langhe to make a fresher, earlier-drinking wine. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala farm their vineyards organically around Monforte d'Alba and La Morra. About half the grapes ferment as whole clusters in concrete, a technique they learned in Burgundy. The wine then ages in oak.

It pours a pale, bright ruby, opening with red cherry, raspberry, and rose. On the palate, the light-to-medium-bodied frame balances juicy red fruit with fine, gentle tannins. A floral, spicy note from the whole clusters sits underneath. Fresh acidity keeps it lifted and lively. It finishes dry, crunchy, and perfumed.

Azienda Agricola Lalú is the collaborative vision of Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala, who met at the University of Pollenzo before gaining extensive experience at elite estates like Trediberri, Conterno-Fantino, and Burgundy’s Domaine Lafon. Their project, which began with a 2015 vineyard purchase in the Roncaglie cru, is centered on organic viticulture and a commitment to carbon-neutral principles. Based in a rental cellar in Serralunga d’Alba, they produce Barolo from high-elevation vines in the Le Coste cru of Monforte d’Alba, along with Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo from Bussia and Roncaglie. Their winemaking is highly adaptive, utilizing native yeasts, spontaneous fermentations started with a pied de cuvée, and selective whole-cluster inclusion that sometimes involves meticulous hand-destemming. By aging their wines in a combination of concrete and large Austrian oak, they aim to preserve the purity of the fruit and the specific character of each vintage while reflecting the technical wisdom they inherited from their mentors in both Italy and France.
