Bodega Clandestina Clandestí Blanc Fugitiu 2024

Grape: Xarel·lo
Vintage: 2024
Type: Orange

This orange wine is xarel·lo from old vines in Sant Martí Sarroca, in the Alt Penedès hills of Catalonia, where Ferran Lacruz farms 8 hectares organically. The grapes ferment on their skins with native yeasts in stainless steel for about 3 weeks. Most of the wine is then raised in 500-liter oak barrels, with a small share in amphora. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur, at a gentle 11.5% alcohol.

It pours a hazy golden amber, opening with tangerine, lemon candy, and a flinty, struck-match note. On the palate, the light-to-medium-bodied frame balances ripe citrus with a fine, grippy texture from the skins. Dried herbs and a salty, chalky note sit underneath. The high natural acidity of xarel·lo keeps it lifted and fresh. It finishes dry, savory, and clean.

Winery

Bodega Clandestina is the project of Ferran Lacruz, who farms 8 hectares of vines around Sant Martí Sarroca, a small village in the heart of the Penedès in Catalonia. He made his first vintage in 2018 and works entirely outside the appellation system, so no regulation stands between the vineyard and the bottle. The grapes are farmed organically, and nothing is added to the wines in the cellar. The work centers on local grapes like xarel·lo, made the way Ferran wants to make them rather than the way the rules allow.
