Grape: Baga
Vintage: 2024
Type: Red

This light red wine is part of the Nat'Cool movement, crafted by Dirk Niepoort to champion fresh, approachable styles in a signature one-liter bottle. Sourced from old baga vines in Bairrada grown on calcareous clay soils, the fruit undergoes an unpretentious carbonic maceration. This gentle technique relies on native wild yeasts to extract vibrant aromatics without pulling harsh, mouth-drying tannins from the skins. Vinification finishes with minimal sulfur additions, leaving a low twelve percent alcohol level and a slight natural effervescence.

It pours a pale ruby color, releasing aromas of fresh strawberries, dried roses, and earthy pomegranate. A juicy frame balances bright red berry fruit with Mediterranean herbs. Snappy, refreshing acidity matches beautifully with whisper-light tannins to ensure a highly drinkable, weightless mouthfeel. A distinct saline quality runs underneath, providing excellent vertical lift and energy. It finishes clean and dry with a twist of pink grapefruit and crushed stone.

Niepoort is one of Portugal's most influential family wine houses, founded in 1842 and transformed in the modern era by fifth-generation winemaker Dirk Niepoort. Long respected for traditional Port, the family became equally important to the rise of dry Douro wine when Dirk began working with old-vine field blends and released Redoma in the early 1990s. Niepoort combines lagares, long aging and historic cellar practices with restless experimentation across the Douro and other Portuguese regions. Today the next generation continues a style defined by freshness, native varieties and finesse, showing that Portugal's great wines can be both deeply traditional and radically open-minded.
