Federico Curtaz Ananke 2020
Federico CurtazGrape: Nero d'Avola
Vintage: 2020
Type: Red
This Sicilian red wine is a pure varietal expression of nero d'avola produced by winemaker Federico Curtaz near Noto. The fruit is hand-harvested from rows rooted in thin, calcareous clay topsoils that naturally limit yields and build structural harmony. Spontaneous fermentation relies entirely on native vineyard wild yeasts in neutral stainless steel tanks, avoiding synthetic corrections. The wine undergoes a natural maturation process, aging partially in neutral French oak barriques to permit the tannins to resolve naturally.
It pours a bright ruby-red color, releasing aromatics of fresh red cherry, wild plum, and dried flowers. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame balances red fruit flavors with a chiseled volcanic mineral baseline. Savory notes of black pepper, tobacco leaf, and chocolate develop nicely across the fluid mouthfeel. Refined, robust tannins provide an elegant grip across the mid-palate volume without feeling heavy. It finishes completely dry and persistent, leaving a clean trace.
Federico Curtaz is a distinguished winemaker known for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines from Sicily, primarily on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. Although he has roots in Piedmont, having worked as an agronomist for Angelo Gaja for 15 years, he eventually fell in love with Sicily's unique volcanic terroir. Adopting a minimal intervention approach, Curtaz focuses on allowing the volcanic fruit and terroir to express themselves with clarity and elegance. He applies his vast experience from the meticulous Gaja vineyards to the unique environment of Etna. Curtaz's wines are highly regarded for their precision, minerality, and ability to reflect the unique character of Sicily's diverse terroir.
