Pian dell'Orino Vigneti del Versante Brunello di Montalcino 2018
Pian dell'OrinoGrape: Sangiovese
Vintage: 2018
Type: Red
Sourced from the Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone, this red wine is an estate expression of pure sangiovese from the southeastern slopes of Montalcino. Pian dell'Orino manages these plots under strict certified biodynamic viticulture protocols to enhance terroir transparency. The hand-picked grapes undergo a traditional native yeast fermentation and an extended skin maceration inside neutral concrete vats. The wine matures for several years in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels to refine its structure naturally.
It displays a radiant ruby hue, opening with nuanced aromas of dried strawberry, dusty florals, rosemary, sage, and leather. On the palate, the silky-smooth frame is deep and structured, pairing soft textures with a core of ripe fruits. A kick of vibrant acidity cuts right through the volume, keeping the mouthfeel lively and energetic. Sweet, crunchy tannins steadily build across the mid-palate toward a violet-tinged finale. It finishes bone-dry, leaving hints of blood orange and spice.
Pian dell'Orino is a small, biodynamic estate in Montalcino run by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach. Located near Biondi-Santi, the domaine works with Sangiovese from carefully farmed parcels and takes a remarkably patient approach to understanding soil, exposure and vine material. The cellar is quiet and traditional in spirit, with native fermentations, large casks and a focus on transparency rather than concentration. Their Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino are elegant, detailed and aromatic, showing Montalcino through finesse, mineral structure and lifted red fruit instead of sheer power.
