Pian dell'Orino Piandorino 2022
Pian dell'OrinoGrape: Sangiovese
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red
This estate red wine is a pure varietal expression of sangiovese blended from across the estate's biodynamic vineyards in Montalcino. Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer utilize low-intervention viticulture to handle the fruit, which grows on complex clay and limestone topsoils. Spontaneous fermentation relies entirely on native vineyard wild yeasts inside neutral concrete vats, avoiding modern extraction techniques. The wine matures for eighteen months in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels to build natural structural balance.
It pours a bright ruby color, opening with aromas of tart orchard fruit, fresh berries, and savory herbs. On the palate, a medium-bodied frame balances red fruit flavors with an underlying chiseled mineral core. Fine-grained, supple tannins provide a smooth structural grip that coordinates nicely across the fluid mouthfeel. A clean line of natural acidity cuts through the center, keeping the texture fresh and focused. It finishes completely dry, leaving a persistent trail of stone.
Pian dell'Orino is a small, biodynamic estate in Montalcino run by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach. Located near Biondi-Santi, the domaine works with Sangiovese from carefully farmed parcels and takes a remarkably patient approach to understanding soil, exposure and vine material. The cellar is quiet and traditional in spirit, with native fermentations, large casks and a focus on transparency rather than concentration. Their Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino are elegant, detailed and aromatic, showing Montalcino through finesse, mineral structure and lifted red fruit instead of sheer power.
