Grape: Nebbiolo
Vintage: 2023
Type: Red

Crafted by former geologist Fabio Gea near Barbaresco, this small-batch red wine is a boundary-pushing translation of Piedmontese terroir. Operating under the estate name La Msoira e'l Rastel, Gea farms less than a single hectare of old, organically worked vines. The nebbiolo grapes are destemmed and subjected to a native-yeast fermentation without temperature control inside custom stoneware. Eschewing traditional wood barrels, Gea raises this zero-zero wine inside handmade porcelain vessels to allow the liquid to breathe.

It pours a medium, luminous ruby color, opening with explosive aromas of fresh red cherries, wild raspberries, and crushed rose petals. On the palate, the medium-bodied framework balances a fleshy fruit presentation with an underlying stony mineral core. A crystalline line of electric, mountain acidity slices right through the center, keeping the fluid mouthfeel completely refreshed. Fine-grained, sticky tannins provide a firm structure that coats the mouth seamlessly.

Fabio Gea:

Fabio is a young winemaker making delicious, distinctive wines from tiny parcels around the Bricco in Barbaresco. He makes 18 different wines with a total production of around 5,000 bottles.

He has a few rows of vines from his grandfather’s property and rents a few more. Within the family’s property, there is Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Grignolino, which amount to less than one hectare.

A geologist turned winemaker, the handmade labels, bottles, and aging are uniquely Fabio Gea. We find these wines fascinating, one of our great joys is having such distinctive wines. Organic (not certified)
