Matthiasson Napa Valley White Blend 2022
MatthiassonGrape: Sémillon, Ribolla Gialla
Vintage: 2022
Type: White
This white wine is an artisanal field blend inspired by the historic white wines of Friuli and the Loire Valley. Steve Matthiasson combines co-planted varieties including sauvignon blanc, ribolla gialla, sémillon, and tocai friulano from organically managed Napa Valley plots. The winemaking focuses on manual techniques to capture site specificity and raw varietal expression from the clay loam soils. The juice undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native wild yeasts and matures on its fine lees in neutral oak casks.
It displays a pale straw hue, releasing complex aromatics of orchard fruit, citrus rind, and field herbs. A medium-bodied frame balances a texturally rich mouthfeel with a sharp line of mineral acidity. Clean flavors of green apple and peach seamlessly wrap around a core of fine lees richness. The neutral wood contact provides a structural cushion that frames the mid-palate cleanly. It finishes bone-dry, leaving a persistent trace of stone.
Matthiasson is one of the quiet intellectual centers of contemporary Napa Valley. Steve and Jill Klein Matthiasson built their estate around organic farming, restrained winemaking and a belief that California wine can be ripe, fresh and table-ready at the same time. Steve's background as a viticultural consultant gives the wines an unusually agricultural foundation, while the cellar work avoids excess oak, alcohol and manipulation. Their range includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Refosco and inventive white blends, all marked by energy, savory detail and a Mediterranean sense of balance that feels refreshingly human for Napa.
