Maison en Belles Lies L'Etrange 2020
Maison en Belles LiesGrape: Gamay, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
Vintage: 2020
Type: Red
This fiery and deeply elegant natural wine stunner from Bourgogne is possibly the only blend from legendary vigneron Pierre Fenals, as the name itself suggests. It’s 60% Gamay à petits grains, 25% Pinot Noir and 15% Muscat Chardonnay from a variety of parcels in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, all farmed in strict accordance with biodynamic principles. It sees spontaneous fermentation of the grapes with whole bunches and carbonic maceration before elevage on the lees. It goes in the bottle with no fining, filtration or added SO2. Warmly convivial, colorfully sincere and blessed with great rustic elegance: liquor-infused Morello cherries, marzipan, black pepper and tamarind with allspice.
Maison en Belles Lies is Pierre Fenals' small Burgundy domaine based in Saint-Aubin, created after a first career far from wine and shaped by a strong commitment to biodynamics. Fenals works tiny parcels across the Cote de Beaune, including Maranges, Santenay, Saint-Aubin and Corton, farming with plant preparations, plowing and close attention to soil life. In the cellar he prefers native yeasts, long elevage, little sulfur and a patient, tactile style. The wines are earthy, expressive and sometimes rustic in the best sense, showing Burgundy as a living farm system rather than a polished luxury object.
