Grape: Sangiovese
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red

This organic red wine is a pure expression of sangiovese crafted by Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer in Montalcino. Sourced from estate plots managed under strict certified biodynamic farming guidelines, the fruit reflects the complex limestone and clay soils. The hand-harvested grapes undergo a spontaneous native fermentation driven entirely by wild vineyard yeasts inside neutral concrete containers. The wine matures naturally in large neutral oak casks to allow the structural components to settle.

It displays a jeweled ruby color, releasing a crisp bouquet of pristine candied cherries, wild berries, and sweet spice. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is juicy and precise, pairing fresh red fruit with well-defined, ripe tannins. A subtle, attractive rustic note lifts initially before blowing off into a lovely lozenge-like mouthfeel. A vertical wave of natural acidity cuts through the center, maintaining great freshness. It concludes with a long, dry, and persistent finish.

Pian dell'Orino is a small, biodynamic estate in Montalcino run by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach. Located near Biondi-Santi, the domaine works with Sangiovese from carefully farmed parcels and takes a remarkably patient approach to understanding soil, exposure and vine material. The cellar is quiet and traditional in spirit, with native fermentations, large casks and a focus on transparency rather than concentration. Their Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino are elegant, detailed and aromatic, showing Montalcino through finesse, mineral structure and lifted red fruit instead of sheer power.
