Grape: Blaufrankisch Rotburger Blauburgunder
Vintage: 2022
Type: Red

Hausmarke Rot is a blend of Blaufrankisch, Rotburger and Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir). It comes across as Blaufrankisch with a more playful side, fresh and agile, full of notes of currant and juicy red cherry. There is a backbone of earth and spice that does not dominate but merely supports this easy-to-drink introduction to the finessed and wonderful wines of Roland Velich. If his Blaufrankisch bottlings are his Burgundian expression of Burgenland, this is his homage to Cru Beaujolais. A blend of every vintage from 2012 to 2022 except 2013.

Moric is Roland Velich's project in Burgenland, and one of the estates most responsible for restoring Blaufrankisch to serious conversation. Instead of treating the grape as a simple, fruit-driven red, Velich approached it with the sensitivity usually reserved for Burgundy: old vines, specific villages, restrained extraction and aging that emphasizes structure over gloss. The wines come from places such as Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, where limestone, schist and old vine material give Blaufrankisch depth, spice and nerve. Moric's best bottles are savory and transparent, proving that Austria's great red grape can be both intellectual and deeply pleasurable.
