Scar of the Sea
$34.00

Grape: Chardonnay Pinot Gris
Vintage: 2024
Type: Rose

Grown above the sandstone quarry at the Bassi Vineyard, this block has an ocean view. This wine is 65% Pinot Gris and 35% Chardonnay. The Pinot Gris was destemmed and then blended with Bassi Chardonnay juice from the press to ferment together.  The wine fermented with native yeast in standing 228L old oak barrels for 3 weeks, then was gently pressed in our wooden basket press. The wine aged for 8 months in old French oak barrels and was bottled with minimal sulfur, and without fining or filtration. 120 cases produced.

Scar of the Sea is the coastal California project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, focused on vineyards shaped by ocean influence, old vines and patient farming. Based on the Central Coast, the winery works with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Gamay and cider apples from sites in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and beyond. The name points to the Pacific's constant mark on the landscape: fog, wind, salt and cool light. Fermentations are native, extraction is gentle and the wines favor energy over weight. Scar of the Sea helped define a more transparent, maritime style for modern California wine.
