Monte Bernardi Retromarcia 2024 Chianti Classico
Monte BernardiGrape: Sangiovese
Vintage: 2024
Type: Red
This low-intervention red wine is a pure varietal expression of sangiovese designed as a tribute to traditional Chianti profiles. Winemaker Michael Schmelzer manages the high-altitude vineyards in Panzano under certified biodynamic guidelines to optimize acid balance over sugar density. The hand-harvested fruit undergoes a spontaneous native yeast fermentation inside neutral concrete and stainless steel vats, completely bypassing heavy oak treatment. The final liquid is bottled unfined and unfiltered to retain its unadorned varietal character.
It pours a bright ruby color, opening with fresh aromas of candied cherry, tarragon, and damp soil. On the palate, a lean and athletic frame delivers juicy red fruit flavors with a clean, savory freshness. Supple tannins provide a gentle structural grip across the fluid mouthfeel without introducing any heavy astringency. A crisp line of natural acidity cuts through the core volume, keeping the texture light and highly versatile. It concludes with a smooth, dry finish.
Monte Bernardi is a biodynamic estate in Panzano, at the southern end of Chianti Classico, led by Michael Schmelzer since his family purchased the property in 2003. Schmelzer approaches the farm as a complete ecosystem and focuses on Sangiovese grown in Panzano's galestro-rich hillsides, alongside traditional regional varieties. Fermentations are spontaneous and élevage favors large, neutral vessels that frame rather than mask the fruit. Wines such as Retromarcia and Sa'etta are transparent, savory and energetic, presenting Chianti Classico through red fruit, earth and firm acidity rather than extraction or new oak.
