Grape: Barbera
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red

This artisanal red wine showcases barbera sourced from east-facing parcels of old vines in Neive near Barbaresco. Winemaker Fabio Gea manages the tiny plot under organic viticulture protocols, using hand-harvesting to cultivate fruit with natural structural balance. Fully destemmed grapes undergo spontaneous native fermentation driven by wild yeasts inside neutral open vats. Aged in custom porcelain containers, it bypasses standard barrel manipulation to establish a pure, unmanipulated identity.

It pours a dark ruby color with purple edges, opening with clear aromatics of wild blackberry, fresh plum, and a hint of damp earth. A medium-bodied frame balances a juicy, fleshy fruit presentation with a firm tannin structure. A sharp, central thread of natural acidity cuts directly through the volume, keeping the profile lively and fresh. Subtle notes of ground pepper and potting soil develop as the wine sits in the glass. It finishes completely clean, dry, and persistent.

Fabio Gea:

Fabio is a young winemaker making delicious, distinctive wines from tiny parcels around the Bricco in Barbaresco. He makes 18 different wines with a total production of around 5,000 bottles.

He has a few rows of vines from his grandfather’s property and rents a few more. Within the family’s property, there is Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Grignolino, which amount to less than one hectare.

A geologist turned winemaker, the handmade labels, bottles, and aging are uniquely Fabio Gea. We find these wines fascinating, one of our great joys is having such distinctive wines. Organic (not certified)
