Grape: Dolcetto
Vintage: 2021
Type: Red

Produced from organically farmed old bush vines in Piedmont, this small-batch red wine offers an unconventional approach to dolcetto. Radical winemaker Fabio Gea rejects modern commercial styling, opting for a traditional low-intervention system in the vineyard and cellar. The hand-harvested grapes are destemmed and fermented naturally with wild yeasts in custom stoneware containers with zero chemical corrections. It matures on its fine fermentation lees without wood barrels, preserving a transparent look at the local terroir.

It displays a deep ruby hue, releasing a complex nose of black cherry, wild bramble, and fresh potting soil. A medium-bodied frame pairs fresh fruit flavors with an underlying chiseled mineral core. A lively wave of natural acidity cuts through the center of the wine, providing excellent lift and refreshing energy. Fine-grained, chalky tannins provide a smooth structural grip that coordinates nicely with the fruit. It finishes completely dry and crisp, leaving a savory trace.

Fabio Gea:

Fabio is a young winemaker making delicious, distinctive wines from tiny parcels around the Bricco in Barbaresco. He makes 18 different wines with a total production of around 5,000 bottles.

He has a few rows of vines from his grandfather’s property and rents a few more. Within the family’s property, there is Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Grignolino, which amount to less than one hectare.

A geologist turned winemaker, the handmade labels, bottles, and aging are uniquely Fabio Gea. We find these wines fascinating, one of our great joys is having such distinctive wines. Organic (not certified)
