"Colli Pinole" translates roughly to "Pine Hills," a nod to the rugged, pine-studded landscape of the Pinole Hill Vineyard where these grapes are grown. The 2021 vintage benefited from a warm growing season, but because the vineyard sits on a high, wind-swept plateau, the wine retains a remarkable "cool-climate" acidity and Northern Rhône-like savoriness. On the nose you’ll find black peppercorns, smoked meat (bacon fat), and dried lavender, layered over a core of tart berry and plum.

Medium-bodied and athletic with a "granitic" or stony texture. The fruit is dark but never jammy, balanced by a refreshing, citrus-like acidity and fine, gravelly tannins.

A nice long finish with notes of tapenade and pine resin.

Graham Markel graduated from Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and got a job at Antica Terra Winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. For seven years, he worked under Antica Terra’s Maggie Harrison and Hiyu Wine Farm’s Master Sommelier, Nate Ready. He learned many things from those two, but the number one thing I learned was to think deeply about winemaking and how to add beauty to every step of the process. No matter how arduous or tiring, every action must be taken to make the best wine possible. Living at Hiyu Wine Farm in Hood River opened my eyes to the many winemaking possibilities that were on offer in the Columbia Gorge.
