Dehours & Fils Maisoncelle Reserve Perpetuelle Extra Brut MV
Dehours & FilsGrape: Pinot Noir
Vintage: MV
Type: Sparkling
Sourced from a small single vineyard in the Mareuil-le-Port district, this red grape Champagne showcases an old-school approach to pinot noir. The Maisoncelle parcel features light limestone and iron-rich soils on a north-east facing slope, producing low-yield, concentrated clusters. Jérôme Dehours utilizes a perpetual reserve system to build structural density, fermenting the base components naturally with native wild yeasts. It undergoes extended bottle aging on its fine fermentation lees before being disgorged as an Extra Brut.
It pours a luminous straw-yellow color with a fine stream of silky bubbles, releasing aromas of red currant, blackcurrant, and lemon rind. On the palate, the medium-bodied frame is vibrant and structural, balancing dark fruit notes with a sharp beam of mineral acidity. Savory layers of candied red berries fold into a dense mouthfeel that shows excellent depth. The fine-grained texture builds cleanly across the mid-palate volume. It finishes long, dry, and mouthwateringly persistent.
Jérôme Dehours took over the domaine in 1999 and started a conversion to organic viticulture, which is now complete. The domaine consists of 42 parcels, all within close reach of the winery. Dehours was the first producer in Champagne to offer “vins parcellaires” emanating from their lieux dits – a now commonplace practice. Total production is typically 70 -80,000 bottles a year, all of which are held back for an above-average period before release.
The wines are not filtered or fined, all enjoy a passage through wood, and they go through malolactic fermentation naturally in the spring. The yeasts used are indigenous, but Dehours makes their own cocktail of the best. Jérôme likes to employ the tailles, so often sold off by other producers, feeling that they impart useful and attractive qualities to the finished wines. The wines are fully aged on lees, and clarified by natural decanting, without filtration or fining.
