This dry white wine is a pure varietal expression of chardonnay sourced from extreme sandstone slopes at the biodynamically farmed Bassi Vineyard, located twelve blocks from the Pacific Ocean. Winemaker Mikey Giugni presses whole clusters directly into old neutral French oak barrels to allow a slow, wild fermentation to take place. The cool growing season extended hang time, permitting the grapes to develop mature flavors while preserving low pH. Left undisturbed on fine lees without bâtonnage, it represents a low-intervention look at maritime terroir.

It appears pale straw with greenish reflections, opening with energetic notes of Meyer lemon, green apple skin, and white floral blossoms. A chalky texture hugs the mid-palate, giving the wine a firm structural grip without relying on heavy wood weight. A searing line of oceanic acidity cuts right through the texture, providing excellent vertical lift. It finishes bracingly dry, long, and clean, leaving a mineral trace.

Scar of the Sea is the coastal California project of Mikey and Gina Giugni, focused on vineyards shaped by ocean influence, old vines and patient farming. Based on the Central Coast, the winery works with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Gamay and cider apples from sites in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and beyond. The name points to the Pacific's constant mark on the landscape: fog, wind, salt and cool light. Fermentations are native, extraction is gentle and the wines favor energy over weight. Scar of the Sea helped define a more transparent, maritime style for modern California wine.
