Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon
Vintage: 2010
Type: Red

This old-school red wine is a rare varietal expression of Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Monforte d'Alba. Winemaker Flavio Roddolo treats the fruit with patient, minimalist cellar practices on his small estate in the Langhe. The grapes undergo a traditional, slow fermentation driven entirely by native wild yeasts in neutral vats. It undergoes an extensive aging regimen in seasoned oak barrels for several years before release, avoiding modern filtration or wood makeup.

It pours a deep ruby-garnet color, releasing mature aromatics of black currant, tobacco leaf, iron, and leather. On the palate, a medium-to-full body pairs concentrated dark fruit with a firm, rustic tannin structure. Savory notes of dried herbs and underbrush integrate smoothly into a dense, texturally complex mouthfeel. A clean wave of natural acidity runs through the center, keeping the aged profile beautifully fresh. It finishes long, dry, and clean, leaving a persistent trace of stone.

Flavio Roddolo is a revered traditionalist winemaker known for crafting deeply authentic, old-school Barolo. As a solitary artisan, he has cultivated a cult following for his uncompromising style and soulful wines that are released only when he deems them ready. Roddolo adheres to a no-frills, low-intervention philosophy. His wines are made with long macerations, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and extended aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak barrels. This results in rugged, intense, and deeply complex wines that are built for the long haul. Roddolo releases his wines long after the commercial norm, often a decade or more after the harvest. His Barolos, in particular, require significant time to evolve in the bottle, rewarding patient collectors with layers of earthy, savory, and elegant character.
