Hanabi Elwha Spelt
HanabiGrape: Hana Barley
Vintage: NV
Type: Beer
Haná pilsner style lager, is brewed with a very rare historic heirloom called ‘Hana’. This heritage barley brings aromatic notes of fresh wholegrain bread, nori, and dried spearmint, along with a long, fresh finish. ‘Hana’ grain was originally used by Josef Groll to brew the world’s first Pilsner in 1842, in the city of Pilsen, in present day Czechia. Brought back from near extinction by British farmers in 2015, we source it from one of the only fields in the world where it can be found today, in Norfolk, England. /p>
Hanabi is technically a lager project rather than a winery, but it belongs in this company because it was born from the same obsessive attention to agriculture, fermentation and provenance. Based in Napa, Hanabi was created by Nick Gislason, winemaker at Screaming Eagle, and Jennifer Angelosante, whose background spans viticulture and wine writing. Their focus is on grain-forward lagers made from rare heritage and heirloom barleys, brewed with old-world methods such as decoction mashing. The beers are treated almost like single-vineyard wines: each release is built around the flavor, origin and personality of the grain rather than around hops or brewery tricks.
