Wenzel Analogue No. 6 2021
WenzelGrape: Sauvignon Blanc
Vintage: 2021
Type: White
This low-intervention white wine represents a unique, non-traditional take on Sauvignon Blanc produced by Michael Wenzel in Rust. The fruit is grown organically on hillsides containing complex quartz and limestone topsoils that optimize flavor development. The winemaking utilizes spontaneous fermentation driven by native wild vineyard yeasts, incorporating alternative vessel processing to avoid standard commercial profiles. The liquid matures naturally on its fine fermentation lees in the cellar before being bottled entirely unfiltered.
It displays a pale yellow color, releasing clean aromas of white peach, citrus rind, and delicate garden herbs. On the palate, a sleek, light-to-medium-bodied frame balances focused orchard fruit flavors with an underlying chiseled mineral spine. A vertical wave of vibrant acidity runs through the center, keeping the fluid mouthfeel thoroughly refreshed. Subtle notes of raw almond add a savory depth across the mid-palate volume. It concludes with a clean, dry, and persistent finish.
Wenzel is Michael Wenzel's family estate in Rust, on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, where the family has been making wine for centuries. The domaine is especially important for its role in reviving Furmint in Austria: Michael's father Robert brought historic plant material back from Hungary in the 1980s, when the variety had nearly disappeared from Rust. Today Wenzel farms organically and works with Furmint, Blaufrankisch, Pinot Noir and other varieties in limestone, gneiss and quartz-influenced sites. The wines are spontaneous, minimally handled and quietly radical, linking Burgenland's present to a nearly lost Danube tradition.
