The 2020 Weingut Moric Lutzmannsburg Ried Kirchberg is a masterpiece in elegance and mineral precision, showcasing the distinct "Burgundian" style that has made Roland Velich famous. On the nose, it offers a sophisticated profile of wild dark cherries and blueberries intertwined with savory notes of dried thyme, crushed stone, and a delicate floral lift of violets. The palate is characterized by an athletic, medium-bodied structure where the vibrant acidity and fine-grained, chalky tannins provide a firm backbone for the pure, juicy fruit. As it develops in the glass, a characteristic saltiness emerges, leading into a long, focused finish that feels both powerful and incredibly fresh. It is a crystalline expression of Blaufränkisch that rewards patience and aeration, balancing cool-climate tension with the deep complexity of Lutzmannsburg’s limestone-heavy soils.

Moric is Roland Velich's project in Burgenland, and one of the estates most responsible for restoring Blaufrankisch to serious conversation. Instead of treating the grape as a simple, fruit-driven red, Velich approached it with the sensitivity usually reserved for Burgundy: old vines, specific villages, restrained extraction and aging that emphasizes structure over gloss. The wines come from places such as Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt, where limestone, schist and old vine material give Blaufrankisch depth, spice and nerve. Moric's best bottles are savory and transparent, proving that Austria's great red grape can be both intellectual and deeply pleasurable.
