Grape: Erbaluce
Vintage: 2021
Type: White

This white wine comes from the historic Vigna Misobolo single vineyard, a small plot situated on the sandy moraine hills of Caluso. The estate manages these old erbaluce vines using traditional, low-intervention methods to enhance natural acidity. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks, completely avoiding wood barrels. The wine undergoes a lengthy twelve-month aging process on its fine lees in steel to encourage mineral density before bottling.

It pours a pale straw color with green highlights, opening with a complex nose of fresh pear, white flowers, and flinty minerals. A medium-bodied frame balances orchard fruit flavors with an intensely crisp, racy line of acidity. The extended lees contact contributes a savory texture that rounds out the mid-palate cleanly without heavy volume. A strong vein of mountain salinity cuts through the mouthfeel, providing excellent structural tension. It finishes long, dry, and savory.

The Cieck estate is located in San Giorgio Canavese, Piedmont, situated between the cities of Turin and Ivrea, where it cultivates 13 hectares of vineyards. The majority of the grapes grown are Erbaluce, an ancient white variety native to the Canavese district, with the remainder being other indigenous varieties: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Neretto, and Freisa. A distinct feature of this area is the use of the traditional “pergola” vine training system, which creates large canopies requiring the harvest to be conducted by reaching up for the grapes.

The estate's origins trace back to 1985 in Aglié, just a few kilometers from its current location. It was initially established for pleasure by founder Remo Falconieri, a typewriter designer for Olivetti and the son of farmers. Remo traveled to France to learn méthode classique sparkling wine production, and in 1985, he set up the estate with a few hectares of vineyard, releasing the first 2,500 bottles of Erbaluce Metodo Classico in 1987. This marked the launch of the Cieck estate, named after the old farmhouse in Aglié where the venture began. The operation has since moved to the Castagnola locality in San Giorgio Canavese.
