Bodegas Frontonio Psicodelico Mezcla 2023
Bodegas FrontonioGrape: Garnacha, Macabeo, Provechon, Miguel de ARco
Vintage: 2023
Type: Red
Sourced from high-altitude, field-blended plots in Valdejalón, this historic co-ferment highlights old-vine local red and white varieties planted together in slate and limestone soils. Master of Wine Fernando Mora hand-harvests the mixed fruit on the same day, co-fermenting the whole clusters naturally with native yeasts in open concrete vats. The inclusion of white grapes alongside rare local reds lowers the extraction while elevating the wine's natural acidity and aromatic lift. Aging takes place in neutral concrete tanks and large foudres to preserve its energetic purity. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a vibrant, low-intervention field blend that revives ancient regional traditions.
A pale, electric garnet color introduces lift-driven aromas of sour cherry, fresh cranberry, white floral blossoms, and crushed pepper. On the palate, focused flavors of tart raspberry, pomegranate, orange peel, and wild oregano are supported by fine, barely-there tannins and a bright, cutting beam of natural acidity. The weight is light, fluid, and highly refreshing, gliding across the tongue with crunchy fruit drive. It closes on a long, clean, and savory finish defined by lingering notes of damp earth and crushed stone.

Bodegas Frontonio is the Aragón project of Fernando Mora MW and Mario López, based around Alpartir and its surrounding mountain vineyards. Garnacha and Macabeo are central to a range built around old bush vines and the differences between individual sites. The vineyards lie at elevations ranging from roughly 460 to more than 1,000 meters, with a mixture of soils that includes limestone-rich clay and slate. Farming follows organic and biodynamic principles, with vineyard tasks and harvesting carried out by hand.
In the cellar, fermentation vessels include concrete, clay jars and wood, selected according to the wine rather than a single house recipe. Historic seventeenth-century caves provide a setting for slow aging, and gravity helps move the wines gently. The range moves from village expressions such as the Microcósmico bottlings toward more specific vineyards and historic parcels. That progression makes Frontonio a useful introduction to Aragón’s mountain wine culture, showing the freshness and detail that can come from Garnacha and Macabeo when the vineyard remains the focus.
